For the first drop of Y-3’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection, the brand looks inward in order to explore its heritage. Brought together under the theme of Craft, this initial offering ushers the unique craftsmanship of Yohji Yamamoto to the fore with a range of elevated Y-3 products.

Elegant silhouettes are matched with luxurious textiles and multi-layer constructions, highlighting the careful craftsmanship at the heart of the theme. Staying true to the brand’s roots and drawing on classic Yohji-Yamamoto tailoring, the clothing designs experiment playfully with dramatic proportions. Similarly, the theme features embroidered graphics, inspired by the iconic Japanese motorcycle subculture, Bosozoku. An ode to artisanal design, these embroidered graphics reference the phonetic Katakana for Y-3 as well as the phonetic Kanji for ‘I LOVE YOU’, while the prominent ‘Roaring Black Crow’ graphic is both a subtle nod to one of Yohji Yamamoto’s early nicknames and, simultaneously, the loud sounds of the Bosozoku motorcycles. Utilising premium fabrics such as refined wool, the garments feature elegant micro-trims as well as subtle three-stripes detailing.

Matching the garment offering’s progressive design approach are a number of new avant-garde footwear styles. Spearheaded by the Y-3 KAIWA and Y-3 RHISU RUN, each sneaker brings an

innovative aesthetic outlook that has come to be expected from the brand. Now firmly established in the Y-3 range, the Y-3 KAIWA silhouette receives a sleek design update. Meanwhile, fuelled by the best of innovative adidas technologies like BOOST™, the brand new Y-3 RHISU RUN propels every move with energycharged comfort. The sneaker’s lightweight design is crafted with a breathable, dual-layer mesh upper, while leather, suede and reflective details add a striking visual edge.

Accompanying the drop is a visually elegant campaign that pays tribute to the craftsmanship painstakingly built into each and every garment throughout the existence of the Y-3 brand. Set in an atelier, the campaign positions models as if they were in a garment fitting in order to highlight the details in the details; from stitches, to fabric selection, to hardware and beyond.
